How often do I need an eye test?

Most people should get an eye test every 2 years.

However, if you have underlying medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke or nerve-related conditions, then it’s wise to get your eyes checked every year.

Annual or more frequent eye tests may also be recommended if you are over 65, already wear glasses or contact lenses or have eye conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal detachment or cataracts.

What’s involved in an eye test?

A comprehensive eye test takes about 30 minutes and involves:

  • Exploring your medical history – some conditions can affect your eyes

  • Asking whether you’ve noticed any changes in your vision

  • Checking your eye health by:

    • Taking retinal images to look at the back of your eye

    • Testing for glaucoma and macular degeneration

    • Measuring the pressure inside your eyes

    • Examining the outer surface of your eyes

    • Seeing how your eyes react to light and movement

  • Checking your eyesight by measuring:

    • How well you can see at various distances

    • Whether you can see colours correctly

    • Whether your eyes are working together properly (known as binocular vision testing)

  • Prescribing corrective glasses or contact lenses if necessary (have fun choosing a pair afterwards!)

  • Advising you on how to care for your eyes.

What if more testing is needed?

If your eye test identifies a concern about the health of your eyes, we may need you to come back for another appointment or refer you to an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) for further investigation.
